How Does Screen Printing Work?

1.   Design creation

2.    Screen preparation

The printer chooses a suitable mesh screen for the fabric texture and the design complexity. A mesh screen then gets coated with the layer of light reactive emulsion left for hardening in the bright light.

3.    Exposing emulsion

The design contains an acetate sheet, it is then placed in an emulsion-coated screen, and the entire setup is left in the bright light. It helps harden the emulsion so that the screen parts covered by the design remain in liquid form. 

4.   Washing emulsion

Once the screen has been exposed for the prescribed time, the hardened emulsion is carefully arranged to print the design. Once the screen gets dried up, the printer makes sure that the required touch-ups or any kind of corrections can be made for making an accurate design.

5.    Preparing the item

After the above process, the screen gets placed onto the printing press. The item to be printed is laid down so that the printing board gets underneath the present screen. There are different processes like automatic styles used for the process. However, mostly the professional uses an automatic rotary carousel printer as it offers the benefit of using several screens at once.

6.    Pressing the ink

The screen is lowered onto the printing board, and ink is filled on the screen’s top. Once done, a squeegee is used for pulling out the ink along the length of the screen. This helps press enter throughout the open area of the stencil, which imprints the design which needs to be there on to the given product.

After painting the item, it is made sure to remove the emulsion using the special washing fluid. It is done so that the mesh can get reused.

7.    Drying the product

Finally, the printed product is then passed through a dryer which creates a smooth finish. Further, the product is checked to remove any residue before passing it to the owner.
